Children and Neighbourhoods in London (CNL) has been running innovative 'participatory' projects for children and young people since 1996. Child centredness and diversity are key to all projects.
Working with public, private and voluntary sector agencies, CNL's projects tackle: community safety and crime prevention; open spaces and the environment; health and well-being, housing and regeneration and play.
The projects aim to see the children involved build up a range of skills as well as confidence, helping with the transition from school to work or college. Participation has frequently had a wide impact: in Camden, for example, children's involvement prompted the establishment of a freephone helpline enabling young people to report drug paraphernalia.
This year, CNL is developing its consultancy service to provide the vital support agencies need to develop inclusive participation processes.
